US Rejects Visas to Former European Union Official and Others Regarding Social Media Rules

Former Regulator speaking at an event
Thierry Breton, has previously been in conflict with Elon Musk.

The US State Department declared it would refuse entry permits to a group of five people, among them a ex-European Union official, for allegedly seeking to "coerce" US-based social media platforms into curtailing viewpoints they oppose.

"These individuals and aggressive non-profits have advanced suppression campaigns by other governments - in each case focusing on US voices and American companies," said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The former European tech regulator implied that a "witch hunt" was occurring.

Breton was described as the "mastermind" of the European Union's online content law, which imposes speech regulations on social media firms.

A Divisive Regulation

Yet, the act has frustrated certain right-leaning Americans who see it as an attempt to silence conservative viewpoints. EU authorities denies this.

Breton has clashed with Elon Musk, owner of platform X, over requirements to adhere to European regulations.

EU regulators imposed a penalty on X 120 million euros over its verification system – the inaugural penalty under the DSA. It said the platform's system was "misleading" because the firm was not "properly authenticating users".

In response, the platform prevented the Commission from making adverts on its platform.

Reactions and Broader Bans

Reacting to the entry restriction, Breton posted on X: "To our American friends: Speech suppression does not lie where you think it is."

Another listed individual, who heads the British disinformation research group, was also listed.

US Undersecretary of State the official accused the GDI of using American public funds "to exhort suppression and targeting of American speech and press".

A representative for the group said the entry bans as "an authoritarian attack on free speech and an egregious act of government censorship".

"These measures today are unethical, unlawful, and contrary to American values," they stated.

Another figure of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a non-governmental organization that combats online hate and misinformation, was also handed a ban.

The undersecretary called Mr Ahmed a "primary partner with efforts to misuse the state apparatus against American people".

Additionally facing restrictions were two executives of a German organization, which the State Department said aided in implementing the DSA.

Responding, the two leaders described it as an "act of repression by a government that is increasingly disregarding the legal principles".

"We will not be intimidated by a state that uses accusations of censorship to silence those who defend fundamental freedoms," they concluded.

Official Rationale

Rubio said that action was initiated to enact entry bans on "representatives of the international suppression network" who would be "typically prohibited from entering the United States".

"President Trump has been explicit that his America First foreign policy rejects infringements of US autonomy. Extraterritorial overreach by foreign censors aimed at American speech is no exception," he added.
