United Nations Lifts Sanctions on President of Syria Ahead of White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his White House visit the following week.

He became interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that drove out Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, concluding 13 years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".

The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

The upcoming meeting will not be his initial visit to America this year. In September, he became the initial Syrian president to present to the United Nations gathering in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
