Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the events

"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA

"On lap three, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"

"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
