Australian Tennis Star Kasatkina Reveals Season Hiatus Citing ‘Emotional Strain’

Australia's top-ranked female tennis athlete has opted to pause her career until the end of the tennis calendar, admitting she is at her “psychological and emotional limit.”

Causes of the Choice

The tennis professional, who this year altered her citizenship to represent Australia, attributed the transition for contributing to significant “emotional and mental stress.”

Additional factors involved the persistent struggle of being distant from her family and the relentless tour schedule.

“I've been far from fine for a extended duration and, to be frank, my match outcomes and showings demonstrate it,” she wrote on social media.

She added, “Truth is, I've encountered a barrier and can't continue. I need a break. A pause from the monotonous daily grind of life on the tour, the suitcases, the outcomes, the stress, the familiar opponents (sorry, girls), all aspects of this existence.”

Individual Challenges and Upcoming Goals

“I can only handle I can endure and handle as a female athlete, all whilst competing with the top competitors in the world.”

“If people consider this a flaw, then I accept it, I am fragile. However, I am confident in my resilience and will improve by being away, resting, reorganizing and revitalizing. Now is the moment I paid attention to my instincts for a difference, my brain, my feelings and my body.”

Kasatkina decided to change allegiance after leaving Russia due to fears for her security, having publicly spoken against the country's legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and the war on Ukraine. Originally based in the Middle East, she moved to Melbourne and became a permanent resident in the spring.

She then announced her engagement to partner an ex-Olympic athlete, who previously earned a silver medal for her birth country at the 2018 Winter Olympics after earlier competing for her native Estonia.

The tennis star further mentioned she has been separated from her father, who remains in Russia, for several years.

Professional Background

A French Open semi-finalist in 2022, the player had ended the previous four seasons in the elite group but is now ranked 19th after a mixed season where she secured 19 victories against 21 defeats.

She is expected to fall from the top 20 by the time the home major begins.

The 28-year-old stated she will return in the following season, “recharged and motivated,” with the lead-in to her domestic major probably acting as a key objective.

Broader Implications

Australia's second-ranked player is another Australian athlete, holding the 35th position.

Kasatkina is the latest elite athlete to cut short their year, following two other stars, amid a recent trend of athletes withdrawing during competitions.

The tour governing body mandates leading players to appear at a minimum of 20 events, encompassing the Grand Slam events, premier tour stops, and additional WTA events.

But world No. 2 a leading athlete remarked in the past, “There's no way to accommodate everything the itinerary. It's possible I will have to choose some competitions and miss them, despite the fact that they are obligatory.

“We must think carefully about it - not really unfortunately care about the regulations and just think what's healthy for us.”
