2026 Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming looks especially strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
